The fashion industry is huge. It produces more than 100 billion garments a year. To put that into perspective: that's 12 times more clothes than people. Still, the estimated share of sustainably produced clothing is in the single digits.
We'd like to change that. But, what is sustainable fashion anyway (read our answer here) and why should we care about it?
Here are 5 reasons why bossladies like you should care about sustainable fashion:
1. SOMEONE’S DAUGHTER / MOTHER / SISTER MADE IT
A real person took the time to make your clothes. Imagine this: over drinks, your good friend tells you her work is not valued at the office, she sometimes feels mistreated by her boss, and she has not been paid her proper salary for a few months now. Would you then also regularly buy the products that her company makes? Probably not.
2. BOSSLADIES SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN
More or less 80% of garment workers are women. And we bossladies know the value in supporting other women. We can do that, too, with our clothes. We like to think about it this way: each time we choose conscious clothes that were made ethically, we are paying it forward in our own little way.
3. YOU DESERVE IT
You work hard. You like nice things. Maybe you, like us, also love a bit of retail therapy from time to time. While the fast fashion shop around the corner is tempting, why not treat yourself once in a while to something special that also makes your conscience feel good? Trust us - there is no better outfit than one that looks fabulous and makes you feel good, too.
4. TO BE HONEST: THE ENVIRONMENT NEEDS IT
There is a saying in sustainable fashion circles that makes this point so clearly: there is no Planet B. You do not have to be an environmentalist to understand that. It’s honestly shocking how harmful fashion can be on the environment. Also, buying more sustainable fashion does not have to happen all at once - we are all for small steps. Actually, we believe it is not so different than the things you probably do in other parts of your life to be nice to the earth (think recycling bottles, reusing bags at the grocery store, or buying organic food).
5. IT IS COMMON SENSE
This point probably doesn’t need much explaining by now. For us, sustainable fashion is a no-brainer. Look, as bossladies we know we mean no harm when we buy clothes. The truth is, however, that some of our purchases can simply be harmful to the people who made the pieces and to our world. We want something better, and we know you do, too.
BETTER IS GOOD
We like to focus on getting better instead of being perfect. We know that being an ethical shopper doesn’t happen overnight. But every step is a step in the right direction. To us, shopping 'better' means being more conscious of the pieces you buy, in whatever way is most important to you.
So, we invite you to ‘be better, not perfect’ with us.
